Highlights:
Fifth-seeded High Point extended its season by completing its sweep of eighth-seeded Lancaster County Christian Monday, beating the Lions 58-38 in a District 3 Class 1A elimination game at Penn Manor High School.
The Eagles (18-7) will play for a PIAA Tournament berth Wednesday against seventh-seeded Conestoga Christian, tentatively set for West York at 6.
The Eagles initially thought thought Monday's victory would send them to the state playoffs for the second straight year before an error was discovered by District 3.
The district's website indicated throughout the tournament that the top six finishers qualified for states before administrators realized that only the top five go this year.
That means the Eagles were facing an elimination game Monday and they came through after a sluggish start, breaking from a 9-8 lead with an 18-0 run to take control midway through the second quarter.
“Once we figured out what we needed to do and how we needed to play we were able to pull away,” said High Point coach Ed Evans. “We really played together as a team today. The times we've struggled this year is when we play too much as individuals.”
Sam Ehst had a game-high 17 points for the Eagles. Zach Kauffman had 15 points and five rebounds and Chad Evans had 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds.
The win was the fourth this season over Lancaster County Christian.
The Eagles have beaten their next opponent, Conestoga Christian, in both meetings this season.
Conestoga staved off elimination with a 54-40 win over No. 3 West Shore Christian.
