Highlights:
After watching his guys hit big shots, share the basketball effectively and control the game with their defense, Exeter coach Matt Ashcroft was excited and ready for more.
“I'd like to keep going,” he said after a season-opening, 60-49 non-league win over visiting Berks Catholic Friday.
The Eagles can't keep going, of course.
The season they have waited so long for was to turn into a pumpkin at midnight; that's when Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf's coronavirus mitigation order was to take effect, halting winter sports for at least three weeks.
“I'm bummed out we can't keep it rolling,” Ashcroft said.
The Eagles made the most of their first — and for a while, only — opportunity. They came out strong, led by as many as 17 early in the third quarter, then withstood a strong run by the Saints.
Josiah Jordan, Berks Catholic's quicksilver point guard, was a thorn the whole night and finished with a career-high 24 points. He threatened to foul out the Eagles' backcourt with his dashes to the basket. His three-point play trimmed Exeter's lead to 46-41 a minute into the fourth quarter.
