Highlights:
Pine-Richland quarterback Ben DeNucci threw three fourth-quarter touchdown passes as the Rams averted Wilson’s upset bid to win a PIAA Class AAAA semifinal 28-17 at Mansion Park Stadium.
The Bulldogs (14-1) led 17-7 after three quarters but twice failed to put TDs on the board with red-zone opportunities in the second half, letting the Rams (15-0) off the hook.
The District 3-AAAA champion Bulldogs appeared headed for their first state title game appearance since 1989 when Jake Klein blocked a punt that gave Wilson possession at the Pine-Richland 9 with six minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Wilson couldn’t advance the ball and missed a short field goal, failing to add to its 14-7 lead.
When the Rams botched another punt attempt a few minutes later the Bulldogs took over at the Pine-Richland 11. Runs by Shane Dantzler and Jake Templin pushed the ball to the 4, and Nick Hart kicked a 21-yard field goal for a 17-7 lead with 2:32 left in the third quarter.
Given new life, DiNucci led the Rams down the field on a pair of long drives, throwing an 8-yard TD to D’Ondre Gastion and a 30-yard strike to Antonio Battaglia for a 21-17 lead with 2:34 remaining.
When the Bulldogs turned it over on downs at their own 15 four plays later, DiNucci tacked on a fourth TD pass with 59 seconds left.
