Central York at Exeter (Boys soccer)
1st Half 2nd Half Final
Central York 0 0 0
Exeter 0 1 1
Highlights:Rory McDermott knocked home the rebound of a Michael Palacios shot with 8:33 to play in regulation, and the Exeter boys soccer team held on for a 1-0 District 3 Class AAA preliminary win over Central York Monday night at Reiffton.

The victory was a milestone for the program: After nine losses in as many district games since 1996, the Berks champion Eagles (14-5-1) finally notched their first 3-AAA win.

“I said to the guys (on Sunday) that it’s really the one thing we haven’t done yet, to break through in the districts,” said Exeter coach Chris Farrell, who had headed the program through the last five of those frustrating 3-AAA losses. “We’ve won divisions, we’ve won county titles. This is the one thing we haven’t done yet, so it does feel good to finally get a win.”

The 20th-seeded Panthers (10-9) did not go down easily, triggering memories of their 2005 first-round upset at Reiffton by playing 13th-seeded Exeter to a scoreless tie through 711/2 minutes. Three years ago, Central York won in PKs after a scoreless 100 minutes that included two overtimes.

But the Eagles, fresh from last week’s county title and now riding a four-game winning streak, finally cashed in with McDermott’s goal.

The road remains challenging for Exeter, which travels to fourth-seeded Central Dauphin for a round-of-16 match Thursday night at Central Dauphin Middle School.
