Highlights:In a bizarre first-round District 3-AAA match at Hershey, Andrew Bellis converted a penalty kick eight minutes into the match after Exeter was issued a red card for a hand ball in the box, and No. 5 Hershey went on to a 4-0 shutout.
The Trojans (16-2-1) advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinal against Red Land, and in doing so ended Exeter’s quest to repeat as 3-AAA champions.
The team’s played 10-vs.-10 for the final 72 minutes; a Hershey player had been issued a previous red card for throwing a punch in the match’s opening minutes.
“To have to play 10-v-10 for 72 minutes certainly didn’t help us,” said Exeter coach Chris Farrell. “But Hershey’s a senior-laden team with a good striker (Tom Palmer) up top. I mean, I’m not overly disappointed.”
Palmer, Joel Bergey and Sal Amato scored second-half goals for the Trojans, who snapped a six-match district win streak for the 12th-seeded Eagles (8-8-2), who were rebuilding this fall with a youthful roster.
“Overall it’s a positive season for us,” Farrell said. “Certainly we got a lot of experience for our young players, and a lot of positive input from those players.”
