Highlights:Junior midfielder Jonathon Craciunescu converted the clinching penalty kick and senior keeper Drew Gilbert made two penalty-kicks saves as the Mounts registered a thrilling PIAA Class A first-round win over Lewisburg at Hughesville Tuesday night.
The dramatic 1-1 (4-3 PKs) win over the District 4 champion Green Dragos (21-3-1) advanced the Mounts (17-7) into Saturday’s state quarter-finals against Christopher Dock at a site and time to be determined.
After a scoreless first half, Craciunescu converted a Corey Hertzog pass into the game’s first goal 15 minutes into the second half. Lewis-burg tied the game at 1-all with nine minutes to play, when Greg Speake’s shot deflected off an Antietam defender and into the net.
Then Gilbert went to work, saving the Green Dragons’ first shot in penalty kicks. Jake Blatt and Hertzog then converted and Lewisburg made its next two attempts to make the PKs score 2-2. After James Smith connected to put the Mounts up 3-2, Gilbert stopped another shot, setting up Craciunescu for the clincher.
Lewisburg had controlled the game offensively, outshooting Antietam 19-10 and holding a 9-1 corner-kicks advantage. But Gilbert’s 15 saves kept the Green Dragons at bay.
It was Antietam’s first PIAA victory since 2004, when it won the Class A state championship, defeating Christopher Dock along the way in the semifinals.
