Best and worst golf movies by Frank Lovece - big whiff!!!
Not sure if Frank Lovece really knows anything about golf...his 5 point rating scale... hole-in-one (should have been Ace), Eagle, Birdie, Par, AND... Subpar... what the hell is subpar relative to the first 4? I could have reported that John Daly had one subpar round in the British Open... which he did! Shouldn't the rating have continued with Bogie... and Double Bogie? Dah! And, Mr. Lovece missed a classic golf movie. "Banning" (1967) starring Robert Wagner, a down and out touring pro who takes a job at a country club and proceeds to hustle the members for their money by way of the big Calcutta (illegal gambling) golf match! Also, starred Jill St. John! And... I would give "Tin Cup" at least a par rating, "The Greatest Game Ever Played" a birdie or eagle rating, if only for its great stylized photography and historical narrative, albeit a Hollywood recreation. "The Legend of Bagger Vance" definitely gets a birdie rating. And finally... "Happy Gilmore" gets a double bogey rating because anybody that I know who plays golf and enjoys golf movies hated "Happy Gilmore"...! Oh, I forgot... I rate "Banning" a birdie!

OK, you're right about "Ace." But "Subpar" was a deliberate - and to me obvious - play on words. I did consider the film "Banning," along with "Dead Solid Perfect" (1988 Cable movie), "Blades" (1989), ""Golfballs!" (1999), "The Boys of Sunset Ridge" (2001), "The Greatest Game Ever Played" (2005), but dude, I only had 10 spaces! Anyway, it's always good to have one's work noticed. With regards,

Frank

Whoops. "Greatest Game" did make the list. I'd actually had "Golfballs!" in there since it was so off-kilter and weird, but my editor had me swap it out and put in "Greatest Game."
