Highlights:
From our news staff
Jereme Good blocked Kyle Yarmush’s shot at the buzzer, punctuating a frenzied finish and preserving Wilson’s comeback, 51-49 win over Daniel Boone in a Berks League interdivision battle of first-place teams at Birdsboro.
“It was a pretty wild, crazy finish,” said Wilson coach Matt Coldren. “Daniel Boone played very, very well.”
The Blazers (4-2 Berks II, 10-3) jumped to a 10-2 lead over the Bulldogs (5-0 Berks I, 9-4), who were coming off Wednesday night’s big Berks I win over Reading High.
But Wilson “just kind of clawed and fought our way back,” Coldren said.
Down three entering the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs tightened their defense and used a16-7 run to take a seemingly safe six-point lead into the final minute.
Zach Zweizig had three of his team-high 14 points with a minute left, converting a three-point play that gave Wilson its six-point advantage with 60 seconds left.
But Neil Rusiewicz sandwiched consecutive 3-pointers around two Wilson free throws, narrowing the Bulldogs’ lead to 51-49. Wilson then turned the ball over on an outlet pass with eight seconds left, giving Boone one last chance and setting up Good’s game-winning block.
Tyler Beck scored 11 and Sam Marrella 10 for the Bulldogs.
Rusiewicz had a game-high 19 points, including 15 on five 3s, for the Blazers. Zach Benjamin scored 17.
