Highlights:
Krissy Wrobel had 21 points and 14 rebounds and Central Catholic staged an impressive second quarter to post a 45-39 win in a pivotal Berks IV girls basketball battle at Alvernia’s Physical Education Center Wednesday night.
The Cardinals (4-1, 12-3) pulled into a first-place tie with the Blue Jays (4-1, 7-7), who took a 12-10 lead after into the second quarter behind a pair of first-quarter-closing 3-pointers from Taylor Keegan.
But Central’s defense clamped down in the second, when the Blue Jays failed to score a field goal and managed just two Tiana Vicari free throws. The Cardinals, meanwhile, got eight points from Wrobel in the period, outscored Holy Name 10-2 and led 20-14 at the break.
“The key was we broke their pressure pretty much the whole game,” said Central coach Jeff Cardinal. “We wanted not to get into a track meet with them, because we only go six or seven deep. So we wanted to get into a halfcourt game, get it inside to our bigs. And for most part we slowed it down and dictated the pace."
Central forward Sarah Kriebel’s one-on-one defense frustrated Keegan in the second quarter, but Keegan recovered late, scoring eight of her team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter to keep the Blue Jays close.
But the Cardinals kept the visitors at arm’s length, never allowing Holy Name to get closer than within five points in the second half. Kriebel and Alexis Ashcroft hit big 3-pointers in the fourth, when Kriebel scored five of her 11 points.
Holy Name played without point guard Rachel Skolny, who is expected to return soon from a knee injury.
