Highlights:
Luis Garcia scored a game-high 14 points and second-seeded Berks Catholic’s relentless defense never eased up on ninth-seeded Bishop McDevitt in a victory in the District 3 Class 4A championship tonight at Giant Center.
The title was the third for the Saints in their seven seasons.
Berks Catholic led by 11 at halftime and extended that throughout the fourth quarter.
Keba Mitchell had nine points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots for the Saints; Casey Jack had seven rebounds and five assists.
The Saints (26-2) will face the District 12 fourth-place team in the opening round of the PIAA Tournament March 9.
The Saints got off to a fast start, scoring the first nine points. They held the Crusaders without a field goal for the first five minutes, and to 1-of-13 shooting in the opening quarter.
The Saints stretched their lead to 17-6 two minutes in the second quarter after back-to-back assists by Jack.
Berks Catholic’s largest lead of the first half came at 23-10, with 1:50 left, after Jack scored on a drive.
The Berks Conference champs set a school record with their 22nd straight win.
The championship game was the 17th for Saints’ coach Snip Esterly, who now has 12 titles, including nine at Central Catholic.
The championship is the third for the Saints, who won the Class AAA title in their first two seasons, 2012 and 2013.
