From our news staff
High Point hit several critical 3-pointers in the third quarter and went on to beat Lancaster Country Day 66-58 in a District 3-A quarterfinal Friday night at Garden Spot.
The win gives the Eagles their first district semifinal and PIAA playoff berth. They play Central Catholic, a 45-43 winner over Holy Name, in Monday’s semis.
“We're excited to be moving on,” said High Point coach Randy Stone. “At the beginning of the year, we talked about getting past this game. To be able to be playing in the third round is special for these guys and for this team.”
After taking a 21-12 first-quarter lead, the Eagles (23-3) lost ground in the second, when Josh Conover (14.0 ppg) picked up his second foul.
Conover sat most of the quarter, and the Cougars cut the lead to four.
But High Point nailed five 3-pointers in the third, including two from Dathan Marshall (team-high 25 points), to outscore Lancaster Country Day 22-17 and take a nine-point lead into the fourth.
The Eagles struggled to contain 6-5 senior Alex Swanson, who scored 14 of his game-high 37 in the fourth, but the Cougars (14-8) couldn’t pull closer than six.
Swanson scored 24 against High Point in a 68-56 win for the Eagles in December.
“We didn't do a very good job of stopping Swanson inside in the fourth, but our defense really did get a couple key stops,” Stone said. “And our outside shot allowed us to stay in the ball game. I think the key was for us to hit that 3-point shot in crucial points of the game.”
High Point’s Jason Carman, who hit a critical 3 in the third, finished with 16 points and Conover 13.
Wyomissing resident Alex Caron scored 12 for Lancaster Country Day.
