Highlights:
Reading High’s Denim Adams says he feels at home at the free throw line.
He looked like it Friday when he knocked down both ends of a one-and-one to seal the Red Knights’ 55-50 win over Steel-High in the Reading Holiday Tournament semifinals at the Geigle.
Adams’ free throws with 5.8 seconds left sent the Red Knights (5-3) into tonight’s final against Downingtown East.
Sophomore Daniel Alcantara gave Reading a 53-50 lead with 18.1 seconds left when he converted a one-and-one.
“We had some amazing free throw shooters out there (at the end),” said Reading coach Rick Perez.
Alcantara is shooting a team-best 84.6 percent from the line.
Adams is at 75.7 percent. He was second on the team a year ago to Wesley Butler at 75.4 percent.
“I’ve been a good free throw shooter for the past three years, so I’m pretty confident when I get to the line, no matter if it’s in tight games (or not),” said Adams, a 6-4 junior who scored a team-high 17 points Friday.
This one was tight from start to finish, with the Red Knights going from five ahead in the early minutes to six behind in the second quarter.
They took a 47-42 lead into the fourth quarter and effectively milked the clock for much of the final period, patiently working the ball outside against the Rollers’ 2-3 zone. They turned it over just once in the fourth quarter, and three times in the second half.
The Red Knights scored just two baskets over the first 7½ minutes of the final quarter but never gave up the lead.
