Highlights:
Mikai Washington hit both ends of a one-and-one with nine seconds left, Penn Hills missed a chance to tie it at the buzzer and Muhlenberg held on for a win in the opening round of the PIAA Class 5A Tournament at Milton Hershey.
Nelson Colon scored a game-high 20 points and had seven rebounds for the Muhls (19-9), who won their first state tournament game since 1990.
The Indians (20-5) set up for a final shot but Gary Bonner Jr., who had knocked down four 3-pointers earlier, saw his attempt at a game-tying 3 from the top of the key glance off the rim, and Justin Spotts grabbed the rebound.
The Muhls hit 10 3-pointers in the game to pull within one of Reading High's all-time season record of 232. Jacob Stoudt and Tyler Kipp each hit three, and each finished with nine points.
Washington had 10 points and five assists for the Muhls, who advance to meet either District 10 champ Meadville (18-6) or District 7 fifth-place Shaler (16-8) in the second round on Tuesday, site and time to be determined.
Wes Kropp led Penn Hills with 16 points but was held to one basket in the second half as the Muhls did a better job collapsing their zone around him.
The Muhls trailed by three at halftime but opened the third quarter with consecutive 3's from Stoudt and Colon, and they held the lead the rest of the way.
Spotts played a key role, with eight points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench.
