Highlights:
The best start in Muhlenberg basketball history came to a skidding halt Friday night at Laureldale.
The Muhls ran headlong into Daniel Alcantara, Moro Osumanu and a determined Reading High squad.
The Muhls battled back from an early 13-point deficit, briefly took the lead in the third quarter, then ran out of gas in the fourth, falling in a Berks Conference Division 1 game before an SRO crowd of more than 1,000.
The Red Knights (3-1, 10-3) were effective in taking away Muhlenberg’s 3-point game with aggressive man-to-man defense and they relentlessly hit the boards.
Reading had a 16-3 rebounding advantage after one quarter and 54-29 for the game.
That -- and Alcantara’s sizzling start -- was too much for the Muhls to overcome.
Alcantara, an emerging 6-4 sophomore wing, was lights out in the opening minutes, knocking down three 3-pointers in the first 5 ½ minutes.
He scored 17 first-quarter points on 6-of-6 shooting and had 22 by half; he finished with a career-high 26 points.
