Highlights:
Tyler Kipp hit four straight free throws in the final minute to help Muhlenberg turn back South Fayette's comeback bid in a 72-66 win in the opening round of the PIAA Class 5A Tournament Friday afternoon at Milton Hershey.
The District 3 champion Muhls (22-6) saw their 20-point, third-quarter lead trimmed to three early in the fourth quarter but held on by making eight straight free throws in the final 41 seconds.
The Muhls advance to play either Greater Johnstown or Shippensburg, who play Friday at 7:30, in the second round on Tuesday.
Tyler Kipp and Jake Stoudt each scored 15 points for the Muhls. T.J. White had 13, all in the second half. Jordan Espinoza had 11 points, all in the first half.
Stoudt hit 3-pointers on consecutive trips early in the fourth quarter after the Lions (16-9) had pulled within 53-50. Later, with the Muhls in a spread offense milking the clock, White pulled up and knocked down a 3 to push the lead to 64-58. South Fayette cut that lead to two twice more in the final minute before Kipp, White and Jordan Rear combined to hit eight free throws.
Kade St. Ledger fueled South Fayette's comeback bid, scoring 17 of his game-high 21 points in the second half. St. Ledger, 6-3, exploited Muhlenberg's lack of size by posting up effectively.
Kipp did an outstanding defensive job on 1,000-point scorer Connor Mislan, who finished with six points and didn't score until the fourth quarter.
