Highlights:
Chris Warren scored on a 70-yard run on Berks Catholic’s first play from scrimmage, setting the tone for a 33-6 romp over Troy in a PIAA Class AA quarterfinal at Towanda High School.
The District 3-AA champion Saints (14-0) advance to a state semifinal next Saturday vs. District 12-AA champ Imhotep Charter (13-1), a 49-0 winner over Catasauqua.
Warren scored on his second touch as well, a 31-yard run on Berks Catholic’s third possession for a 13-0 lead.
The Saints used a 39-yard punt return by Pop Lacey, to the 9, to set up quarterback Patrick Causa’s 1-yard TD dive in the final minute of the first quarter for a 20-0 lead.
The Saints played error-free football and forced three takeaways, giving them a Berks-leading 40 for the season.
They used the first of those, Blake Lutz’s fumble recovery on a poor pitch by quarterback Jed Wright, to set up another score just before the half. Freshman Marcus Wilson’s 2-yard dive made it 26-0 with 5:08 to go in the first half.
The Saints extended the lead to 33-0 on Pop Lacey’s 46-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
Troy’s only score came with 1:34 remaining, against the Saints’ second-team defensive unit.
