Highlights:
Chris Martir ran for a pair of touchdowns and made a key interception as Wyomissing held off Berks Catholic 34-28 to win the Berks Football League Section 2 championship at Forino Sports Complex.
Martir ran 17 times for 146 yards to help the Spartans (6-0, 10-0) claim the Keeley-Wolfrum Trophy that goes to the winner of the “Backyard Brawl.”
Martir's interception late in the third quarter gave Wyomissing the ball at the Berks Catholic 39, and the Spartans needed just eight plays to go up 34-21 on Charlie Tonneslan's 3-yard touchdown toss to Colin Smith.
The Saints (5-1, 9-1) used Isaac Lutz's 47-yard kickoff return to the Wyomissing 42 to set up Lutz's 2-yard TD run – his third score of the night – that made it a six-point game with 4:34 left.
The Saints got the ball back once more but a pair of penalties caused them to come up short on fourth down and turn the ball back to the Spartans with 2:06 left.
Wyomissing ran out the clock to snap Berks Catholic's 29-game regular season winning streak.
