Highlights:
BIRDSBORO – Behind another dazzling performance from Nick Singleton, the Governor Mifflin Mustangs defeated the Daniel Boone Blazers 54-21 on Friday night in Section I play.
With the win, the Mustangs move to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in section play. Meanwhile, the Blazers suffer their sixth-straight loss as they fall to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in section play.
The game had a wild start as Ben Adams could not recover the opening kickoff for the Mustangs following a sharp bounce from the ball. Tyler Kay recovered the ball which set the Blazers up at the Mustang nine-yard line. Blazer quarterback Carter Speyerer needed just two plays to get Daniel Boone on the board as he found a wide open Alex Vassallo for a seven-yard score just 46 seconds into the game. The Blazers halted the Mustangs opening drive, but a muffed punt by Dan Hojnowski put the Mustangs at the Blazer 21-yard line. Three plays later, Brandon Strausser knotted things up at seven with a four-yard touchdown. Singleton began his big night on the ensuing Mustang possession as he ran 60 yards up the middle to make it a 13-7 game at the 2:35-mark of the first quarter. A Blazer three-and-out gave the Mustangs the ball back at their own 21-yard line, but Singleton made quick work of it with a 79-yard touchdown run to put Mifflin up 20-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Singleton opened the second quarter with a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown, his first of the season, to put the Mustangs up 26-7. On the first play of Blazers next drive, Michael Raab picked off Speyerer from a deflection, and raced back 38 yards for the touchdown to make it 33-7. The Mustang defense continued to make things difficult for Speyerer in his first start of the season at quarterback as a three-and-out set up another Mustang score in the second quarter. Senior quarterback Kolbie Reeser made it 40-7 on a one-yard score on 4th and goal to cap a 10-play 45-yard drive. Singleton added his third rushing touchdown just before halftime to put Mifflin up 47-7 on a 69-yard scamper.
In the second half, the Blazers snapped the Mustangs 47-point run with a four-yard touchdown run from Tanner Vanderslice to make it 47-14 early in the 4th quarter. Dan Hojnowski picked off Reeser in the end zone, and raced 73 yards to the Mustang 27-yard line to set up the touchdown for the Blazers. Jaiden Quiles scored the lone Mustang touchdown of the second half on a 37-yard run on the ensuing possession to bring the score to 54-14. Blazer running back AJ Hofer capped the scoring for the contest with a seven-yard touchdown at the 3:43-mark of the fourth quarter to make the score 54-21.
The Mustangs out-gained the Blazers 561-110 with 461 yards coming on the ground. Singleton compiled four touchdowns behind 291 all-purpose yards. His 226 rushing yards were his second-highest single-game total of the season, and has now scored 22 rushing touchdowns on the season to lead the Berks Football league.
