Highlights:
Jordan Auman threw a pair of touchdowns and Evan Niedrowski ran for 113 yards and a touchdown as Wyomissing ended Middletown's reign in the District 3 Class 3A Tournament with a heart-stopping 24-21 win in the championship game at the A-Field.
The top-seeded Spartans (11-0) got a fourth-down stop with 1:16 left on an interception by sophomore Tommy Grabowski to clinch their first district title in five years, and eighth overall.
It was the third turnover of the game for the second-seeded Blue Raiders (10-2); the Spartans played error-free football.
Wyomissing will face Tamaqua in the state quarterfinals next week, date and time to be determined.
Wyomissing led 10-0 after Niedrowski finished off a 17-play drive with a 1-yard TD run early in the second quarter but the Spartans fell behind 14-10 early in the second half.
They took command again on two Auman TD throws, a 63-yard catch-and-run by Darren Brunner and a 21-yard strike to Max Hurleman, the latter giving the Spartans a 24-14 lead in the final seconds of the third quarter.
Middletown pulled within 24-20 on a touchdown with 6:44 remaining, then stopped Wyomissing on downs at its own 27.
The Blue Raiders drove to a first down at the Wyomissing 26 with 2 1/2 minutes left but could get no closer.
Wyomissing won district championships in 2014, 2012, 2006, 2001, 1993, 1991 and 1990, all under Bob Wolfrum. The Spartans won three titles in Class 1A and four in Class 2A, all under the PIAA's four-classification system.
