Highlights: Berks Catholic’s defense had given up more yards than any team in the league through the first four games of the season, but the Saints came up with some key takeaways and a pair of late fourth-down stops in a 56-28 Berks Football League Section 1 win over Exeter Friday at Don Thomas Stadium.

Josiah Jordan picked off a pass to set up one third-quarter score and Berks Catholic caught a break when a low line-drive kickoff deflected off one of the Eagles’ up men and was recovered by the Saints to set up another score.

Those turnovers helped the Saints wrest control of what had been a back-and-forth battle throughout the first half.

The Saints (2-0, 3-2) trailed 28-21 at the half before ripping off five straight touchdowns to end the game.

The Saints took the lead for good in the final minute of the third quarter at 35-28 on Brad Hoffman’s 7-yard TD pass to Tyler Givens.

Colby Newton ran for three touchdowns and 198 yards on 27 carries to lead Berks Catholic.
